In August 1382 Khan Tokhtamysh, who had reunited the Golden Horde, took Moscow by deception after a siege, burned it and killed much of its population. Dmitry Donskoy was forced to resume paying tribute. The chronicles recorded thousands of dead buried at the prince's expense. The sack showed that Moscow was not yet strong enough to throw off the yoke.
