Vasily III died in December 1533, leaving his three-year-old son Ivan IV. His mother Elena Glinskaya governed and carried out a currency reform before dying in 1538, after which boyar factions fought for control. Ivan later recalled his neglect by the boyars. The boyar rule of Ivan's childhood shaped his hostility to the aristocracy.
