Russia tried to retake Smolensk during Poland's interregnum in 1632, but the army of Mikhail Shein was surrounded and forced to capitulate. The Treaty of Polyanovka (1634) confirmed Polish possession, while Władysław IV gave up his claim to the Russian throne. Shein was executed on his return. The defeat convinced Moscow to reform its army along western lines.
