In June 1648 Muscovites rioted against a heavy salt tax and corrupt officials. Several officials were killed and the tsar's tutor Boris Morozov was sent away. The same year Semyon Dezhnev sailed round the eastern tip of Asia. The riot led directly to a new law code. The riot showed the social tensions of the 17th century, called the 'rebellious age'.
