# Peter I takes power (1689)

In August 1689 Peter fled to the Trinity Monastery fearing a coup. The nobility and much of the army rallied to him; Sophia was removed and confined to the Novodevichy Convent. Peter left government mostly to his mother's family for several years. Peter's personal rule began the transformation of Russia.
