Peter joined Denmark and Saxony against Sweden in 1700. On 30 November (N.S.) the 18-year-old Charles XII routed the much larger Russian army besieging Narva. From 1 January 1700 Russia had also begun counting years from the birth of Christ instead of from the creation of the world. Peter used the defeat to rebuild his army, even melting church bells for cannon. Narva began a 21-year war that turned Russia into a great power.
