# Russia becomes an Empire (1721)

On 2 November 1721 (N.S.) the Senate proclaimed Peter 'Father of the Fatherland, Emperor of All Russia', and the Russian Empire formally came into being. Foreign powers recognised the imperial title only gradually. The Russian Empire lasted until 1917.
