At Austerlitz Napoleon crushed the Russian and Austrian armies under the eyes of Alexander I and Francis II. Russia withdrew from the war for a time. Tolstoy made Austerlitz a central scene of 'War and Peace'. The defeat began Russia's long struggle with Napoleon.
