Grigori Rasputin, the peasant mystic trusted by the empress for his apparent ability to help her haemophiliac son, was murdered by Prince Felix Yusupov and others on 30 December 1916 (N.S.). The Central Asian revolt against conscription was also suppressed that year. The conspirators hoped to save the monarchy.
