# Marwan's campaign against the Khazars (737)

In 737 the Umayyad general Marwan ibn Muhammad led a huge army through the Caucasus and reached the Volga, forcing the khagan to accept Islam temporarily. The Arabs soon withdrew and the Khazars remained independent. The long Arab-Khazar wars fixed the Caucasus as the northern limit of the Caliphate. Khazar resistance kept the lands north of the Caucasus outside the Islamic empire.
